We all know about the totalitarian mindset of much of the gay rights movement. Live and let live is not enough for these people. They will not be satisfied until everyone affirms their beliefs about homosexuality and marriage, and those who don’t will be made to pay the price. A telling example comes from Oregon, where a Christian couple who owns a baking business refused to provide a cake for a lesbian couple, who promptly sued them for violating their civil rights under the Oregon Equality Act of 2007.
The reaction from gay rights groups was predictable, practically putting the bakery out of business. But what is really creepy and revealing is this response from an Oregon official. Notice the word he uses that would warm to cockles of any Soviet commissars’ heart:
Last August, Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian told The Oregonian, their desire is to rehabilitate businesses like the one owned by the Christian couple.
“Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs, but that doesn’t mean that folks have the right to discriminate,” he told the newspaper. “The goal is never to shut down a business. The goal is to rehabilitate.”
Rehabilitate, interesting word, that, right out of 1984. Those conservatives and libertarians who are sanguine about the push to redefine marriage, who think it inevitable and benign, ought to carefully consider the real agenda of liberal efforts to redefine marriage. There is nothing benign about it.
