NBC has announced that Dermot Mulroney will star as the title character of the upcoming Rockford Files series remake. Story here.
I have watched only one or two episodes of the original, 1970s version of the show, which starred James Garner as a laid-back, personable private detective who tends to get involved emotionally with his clients, but I know that it has retained a strong fan base over the years, and many are concerned about whether the new series will be as appealing as its predecessor.
My guess is that it won’t. The producers of the 1970s series, Stephen J. Cannell and the late, legendary Roy Huggins (77 Sunset Strip, Maverick, Hawaiian Eye, Bourbon Street Beat, etc.), are not involved in this one. The new show will be helmed instead by comic actor Steve Carell and writer David Shore.
