The newspaper with the largest circulation in the United States, USA Today, was forced by observable science to admit (reluctantly, and with a cheeky style) that the planet is not cooperating with Al Gore’s infamous testimony before Congress that the Earth has a fever.
To reset the stage, Al Gore testified before Congress in March 2007 that "the planet has a fever."
"If your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor. If the doctor says you need to intervene here, you don’t say, ‘Well, I read a science fiction novel that told me it’s not a problem.’ If the crib’s on fire, you don’t speculate that the baby is flame retardant. You take action."
Well, something’s on fire. And it’s not the crib. More like the liar Al Gore’s pants. Not only has the planet’s temperature not gone up in the last decade, we’re in a cooling trend.
Oh, the humanity. As if global warming proponents don’t have enough to worry about already, with Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., Fox News and the Heartland Institute, now Mother Nature has thrown them yet another curve: July 2009 was officially the coldest July on record in six U.S. states, according to the National Climatic Data Center. Specifically, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Not one of the coldest, mind you, but the absolute, rock-bottom, chilliest on record. Records go back to 1895. Meanwhile, four others – Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri and Kentucky — had their 2nd-coldest July ever recorded. [Emphasis mine]
It sure is inconvenient when Mother Nature won’t cooperate with the Al Gore brigade. Of course, the global warming alarmists have now taken to calling what they see as a human-caused catastrophe "climate change" — a clever way to maintain that any change in temperature is all our fault. What they fail to admit, however, is that Earth’s climate is never stable, and never has been.
But if the coldest July on record is enough to get the public to even further tune out these zealots, that’s a good development for our personal and economic freedom.
Thanks for the comment, Shawn. Actually it’s the global warming alarmists who continually confuse climate and weather. They, after all, are the ones who take every bad weather event and claim that it’s because of GW. For example, the claim that July 2009 was the fifth warmest month on record. So what if it was? And the reality is that it absolutely was not, as the numbers you cite are incorrect, as noted below, because they depend on deliberately “adjusted” ocean temperature data.
This use of every weather event as proof of global warming is in fact endemic with that movement. Some even blamed the effects of the tsunami on it a couple of years ago!
For the real dope on GW and the real facts that apply to your claims here, I went to an expert: James Taylor, editor of Environment & Climate News, a publication for which I serve as senior editor. Here are the facts:
“Temperatures are currently roughly 0.2 degrees Celsius warmer than they were in 1980, according to NASA satellite data. That means temperatures have risen only 0.2 degrees Celsius in the past 30 years–and they have been cooling for most of the past decade. Hardly a crisis there, and no evidence at all of a manmade global warming effect given that human CO2 emissions have grown rapidly during that period.
“It is interesting that you reference NOAA ocean temperature data. Satellite readings of ocean temperatures and temperature readings from the comprehensive ARGO buoy network show ocean temperatures pretty closely tracking the satellite data for global atmospheric temperatures–which have been falling for the past several years. In an attempt to hide this embarassment, NOAA essentially ignores the highly precise satellite and ARGO ocean readings and instead reports random sea temperatures collected by ships in commercial ocean lanes, which NOAA then ‘smooths’ to mirror the James Hansen/Goddard Institute ‘smoothed’ atmospheric temperatures that also contradict the precise satellite measurements of atmospheric temperature.
“The fact that the latest and greatest ocean temperature measurement technology–the ARGO buoy network–confirms the NASA satellite measurments is strong evidence that NOAA and Hansen’s Goddard Institute are cooking the books when they report much more global warming than the satellite measurements show.
“You can read more on this yourself on Anthony Watt’s website, wattsupwiththat.com. He covered this issue quite well about a week ago.” The use of cooked data is never justified when better numbers are available.
Good job cherry picking the data. While it is true that six states showed their coldest July ever, the overall temperature of Earth’s surface show no such trend. According to the NOAA website (which is the host of the NCDC site attributed above), “The combined global land and ocean surface temperature for July 2009 was the fifth warmest on record, at 1.03 degrees F (0.57 degree C) above the 20th century average of 60.4 degrees F (15.8 degrees C).” (emphasis mine). Source: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2009/20090814_julyglobalstats.html
The same site also notes, “The global ocean surface temperature for July 2009 was the warmest on record.”
Hardly evidence for your claim.
You should go back and check on the difference in definition between CLIMATE and WEATHER. Apparently, you have these two terms confused.
Thanks heavens the public doesn’t want more cowbell?
