U.S. moviegoers avoided theaters over the weekend, except those showing new release Paranormal Activity 3. The prequel to the first two Paranormal movies drew a hefty $54 million in ticket sales, far above industry expectations. Recent releases Real Steel and Footloose did all right, finishing second and third, respectively, around the $11 million mark.
The other new releases crashed. The Three Musketeers finished fourth with a much lower than expected $8.8 million in ticket sales, and nobody went to see Johnny English Reborn, a spy comedy starring Rowan Atkinso (Mr. Bean). It finished 8th with just $3.8 million.
Looks like I’m going to have to get to a theater this week to see Johnny English Reborn, as it obviously won’t last long. That’s a shame, because Atkinson is a brilliant comedian, and I enjoyed Johnny English.
Not to worry about Atkinson’s prospects for more films, however: the original Johnny English brought in only $28 million in the United States in 2003 but grossed an appealing $132 million worldwide.
